Verizon/Terremark – A New Phase in Cloud Computing Begins…

Back in September, I blogged about a strange situation I had noticed in the cloud market: Where Are the Telcos? At that time, Verizon had made their initial announcement about their new CaaS offering for the SMB market, which only seemed to highlight the relative lack of leadership and progress by telcos in the cloud market. With yesterday’s big news about Verizon acquiring Terremark, it appears that the telcos are starting to show up. Several people commented on the earlier blog that my arguments were mainly true for North American telcos, and as I’ve learned since, outside of North America, the telcos have been far more active in building clouds and embracing this new business model.  But as a global leader, Verizon’s recent activities are a major step in the evolution of the cloud industry, likely to have significant impact on the market overall. While it’s too ... (more)

Why the Cloud Computing Acquisition Parade Will Continue

OpSource, a privately held, SAS 70 Type II, PCI DSS Level 1 Cloud Service Provider headquartered in Santa Clara, CA with 150 employees worldwide has been acquired by Dimension Data, a $4.7 billion ICT services and solutions provider and wholly owned subsidiary of NTT. Like others before them (Verizon + Terremark; Time Warner + NaviSite; CenturyLink+Savvis), they too have “figured it out”. Cloud computing is a complex, capital-intensive business. Scaling is expensive. Other companies in the segment are likely to continue marching along this road, particularly as the executive management at companies wanting to play in the Cloud segment reach the same conclusion. Cloud computing is not hosting. Scale or go home. According to Treb Ryan, OpSource CEO and co-founder, mapping a migration path and architectural design for the cloud is complex and requires in-depth understa... (more)

Leave GoDaddy Behind with VPS Hosting Plans

How valuable is the uptime for an Internet business? Plenty valuable, especially in the wake of the September server outage at web hosting firm GoDaddy, which affected a multitude of customers. GoDaddy is the Internet's largest registrar, hosting millions of websites on its servers. At the time of the outage, rumors were strong that someone had hacked the GoDaddy servers. According to TechNewsWorld, a Twitter user named @AnonymousOwn3r tried to claim responsibility for bringing down the servers at GoDaddy. But GoDaddy later announced that its downtime loss wasn't the work of an anonymous hacker, but rather was due to 'a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables.' To make up for the losses to clients, GoDaddy later offered a 30 percent discount to compensate customers. But that wasn't enough for some. In the weeks afterward, a class-action ... (more)
